A broker needs the stacking plan for the eighth floor, or the owner wants to see vacancy across the building, and the only thing you have is a flattened drawing that won’t open in anything useful. So you rebuild the plan by hand, suite by suite, from a file that was already weeks out of date when it landed in your inbox.

Why the plan is out of date before you open it
A stacking plan is only as current as the measurements behind it, and the building stops matching those measurements the moment a tenant moves. A suite gets demised. A buildout shifts a wall. A floor gets recombined for a larger lease. None of those events update the CAD drawing on their own, so the file you pull is a snapshot of a building that no longer exists.
It compounds because the drawings live everywhere except one place. The base building architect has one version. The tenant’s interior architect drew a suite and sent it to the city for the permit, and that number, not yours, is the one written into the lease. A leasing broker is working off whatever was current when they last asked. After the original measurement, a different party remeasures during a deal without ever referencing the source records, and now the numbers can’t reconcile.
None of this is anyone’s fault. Buildings change and standards get updated. The drawings just have no way of keeping up on their own.
